Literally translated, Tae Kwon Do is tae (foot), kwon (fist), and do (way, style, system, or art). It is a Korean Martial Art that has developed through centuries of eastern civilization. Today, Tae Kwon Do has evolved into not only the most effective method of self-defense, but an intricate art and exciting sport, regardless of age or sex --as well as a method of maintaining physical fitness.

Many think breaking boards and bricks is what Tae Kwon Do consists of, but this is an erroneous concept. Such demonstrations merely show the tremendous speed and power the body is capable of through Tae Kwon Do. It is one of the best methods of achieving physical fitness since it utilizes almost every muscle of the body, making it a natural weight regulator--either taking pounds off or putting them on.

Tae Kwon Do's challenge lies in the adept use of techniques without having actual body contact. Because of this refrain from contact, injuries are almost nonexistent, which makes it safer than football. Blocking, kicking, striking, and punching techniques contribute to making it the most exciting of competitive sports, and it is rapidly taking its place in the world milieu. Tremendous skill and control are required in its mastery and through control, balance and power in "fighting forms," Tae Kwon Do is regarded as a beautiful and highly skillful oriental art.

Tae Kwon Do is considered the ultimate in unarmed self-defense. Through the application of the scientific principles of body movement, the Tae Kwon Do student develops tremendous speed and power, enabling him to easily defend himself against a would-be assailant.

As a form of physical exercise, Tae Kwon do has a great effect on children's growth and development as well as youths' and elders' physical fitness. The technique and form of Tae kwon do are designed to develop control of all parts of the body. In addition, Tae kwon do demonstrates poise, allows flexibility in all joints of the body, and helps relieve fatigue and stress.
